Anti-Haitianismo in the DR

Came across Myriam Chancy's piece from her blog on the recent Dominican ruling stripping Dominicans of Haitian ancestry of their citizenship. It's a decent overview of the crisis and worth a read. One wonders if such a court ruling had passed in the 1920s or 1930s, would Trujillo himself lost his citizenship! Anyway, in the hopes of moving beyond nationalist and racist measures taken to separate two halves of the same island, let's enjoy a fusion of Haitian and Dominican music in this rendition of the lively "Bobine."

  1. Did you read the NYT article on this subject? http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/24/world/americas/dominicans-of-haitian-descent-cast-into-legal-limbo-by-court.html?_r=0
The 'moral' authority of the Church is there for all to see.

    1. Yes, the Church is disgusting. Good to see them be honest about it, though.

Your boy Abagond claims he doesn't write his blog for white people! Interesting...

    2. My boy Abagond is too quick to see sense in the crap some of his white racist readers contribute. I would have banned all of them, but that's me. Why he puts up with "The Joka", on of the more unpleasant of that ilk, is beyond me. Thokozile Xaba seems to want attention more than anything else. I kind of agree with her point but I dislike her rudeness toward 'my boy'. When I've disagreed with you, I've done so politely. I don't get the connection between the Boondocks strip and your 'Interesting Analysis of Haitian Revolution from African Perspective' post.

    3. Yes, Thokozile is beyond rude (I think she's South African, too, but that's a guess based on her name). I would ban them too, but deep down Abagond probably does think he can win over white people by writing blog posts. As for the Boondocks, there's no point, I just enjoy The Boondocks! Have you read it? Jazmine Dubois, the biracial friend of Huey Freeman, is of partial Haitian descent, too, although it never really comes up in series.

  2. I've read The Boondocks. Initially I liked it, but became disenchanted with it when he moved it to TV. Partial Haitian descent! just how partial is her descent? Why can't she be objectively of Haitian descent? Sorry couldn't help unburden myself of this joke.

    1. Hahaha. If I remember correctly, her father has some distant Haitian roots, but is mostly African-American (and with roots in Louisiana, so it's unclear if Jazmine meant Saint-Dominguan or actually Haitian, but based on how recent this allegedly Haitian ancestry appeared, I assumed the latter). The TV show is so different from the comic strip, I prefer the comics. The TV show has its moments though

    2. Nice chatting with you. Let's do it again next time you post something germane to Haiti.

    4. Haha, what brought you back? I saw something about a boycott campaign on Facebook. I'm down.
