I was just reading about Dumesle in Haiti's Paper War. The author presents a convincing thesis that Dumesle's 1824 text was the final assertion of southern republican victory over the legacy of Christophe during Haiti's civil war (Christophe's kingdom in the north versus the southern republic of Petion). Here, Haiti Inter offers a nice summary of Dumesle's life and work that helps elucidate his significance for early national literature (Bois-Caiman).
