Jemima Pierre tells it like it is on BAR for their December 31st show on the racist Dominican Republic's government, the horrible corruption of Martelly (and his illegal dealings with Dominican politicians and elites) and the vast gold deposits of Haiti. As usual, poor Haitians are sold out while Haitian elites side with whoever they can to sell out and exploit the black poor. In other news, I am also becoming more and more of a fan of Dominican merengue. Check out "Una mujer de color" by Angel Viloria (my guy) and "Felix Cumbe." I think the merengue of the 1960s onward incorporated more influences from salsa. Last but certainly not least, one of the more innovative figures in post-Trujillo merengue, Johnny Ventura's "La Agarradera" is also worth listening to. While you're at it, check out my nascent Dominican merengue playlist on Youtube. Weird, odd fact, Johnny Ventura would become a mayor of Santo Domingo, just as Manno Charlemagne, a Haitian singer, would also become mayor of Port-au-Prince. It's interesting how musicians on both sides of the island would become mayors of their respective capital cities...
Well, you're always good for a laugh. "As usual, poor Haitians are sold out while Haitian elites side with whoever they can to sell out and exploit the black poor. In other news, I am also becoming more and more of a fan of Dominican merengue." A nice segue from the tragic to the trivial. Your claim that Haitian elites usually side with whoever is false because you are lumping Toussaint, Dessalines and Christophe with their epigones. The betrayal of the Haitian Revolution began when these titans vanished. What did they leave behind? Toussaint freed the slaves and defended that freedom against two-thirds of the French navy and some forty to sixty thousand troops. Dessalines finished the invaders off at Vertieres. When Haitians were kidnapped and sold into slavery by the remnant of the French forces on what is now the Dominican Republic, he invaded that territory and ran the bastards down to Santo Domingo. What a contrast to today! Christophe gave us the only monuments we have a right to be proud of. Unfortunately he wasn't able to give his people the greatest gift of all, the gift of knowledge in the form of universal education. The idiots who depict the man as some kind of feudalist seem to think that social formations can be conjured up out of thin air. The 210 anniversary of Haiti is not about drinking joumou soup alone. Happy new year, how's that for a trivial segue?
ReplyDeleteAs usual, you're an even bigger laugh. Your trollish behavior does provide friends of mine with more than enough fodder for ridiculous online behavior and comments. Thanks!
ReplyDelete"a troll (/ˈtroʊl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people,[1] by posting inflammatory,[2] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a forum, chat room, or blog), either accidentally[3][4] or with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[5] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[6] This sense of the word troll and its associated verb trolling are associated with Internet discourse, but have been used more widely. Media attention in recent years has equated trolling with online harassment. For example, mass media has used troll to describe "a person who defaces Internet tribute sites with the aim of causing grief to families."" Sorry to hear you feel that I've caused you grief. I'm curious to know the ridiculous online behavior I elicited from your friends. I'm having a tough time seeing myself in this description of a troll. I thought you were a serious seeker of truth, who was ignorant of a few facts, such as the attempts of the creators of Haiti to build a nation and the mores of the place. I simply pointed out the gaps in your knowledge of the subject. Since you feel that pointing out your ignorance is harassment I'll make no more comments.
DeleteOh please. Your condescending and ridiculous tone speaks to your own ego and I wonder why you waste so much time trolling on the internet instead of living your life. You have been informative at times, and occasionally funny for other reasons beyond your disgusting condescension and arrogance, but good riddance. If you don't see yourself as a troll, then I question your intelligence. Per usual, you seek to point out 'errors' in some of my posts that are based on misunderstandings or generalizations, such as your claim about Haiti's revolutionary leaders. They were never a point of discussion in the anti-elite claim made in that one post, I was referring to other leaders. In my opinion, elites, as in most societies, usually don't care too much for the fate of others, as it's usually in their interests to not do anything to uplift them. Also, for someone to call themselves my "Dutch uncle" and use such sickening condescending words speaks to your character. Your're even worse than some racist white man who sent me the most hateful, vitriolic email I have ever received in my life.
ReplyDeleteGoodbye!
