Beauty and the Beast (Live)

So nice to hear one of Wayne Shorter's classic tunes performed live by young people. It really takes one back to the good ol' days. Although Native Dancer was never our favorite Shorter album, this tune always struck us as an effective melding of jazz and funk influences.

Due to our renewed interest in Brazilian music, we were listening to Shorter's Native Dancer repeatedly a few weeks ago. Hearing the news of the death of one of the great composers in jazz was devastating. Few could match the versatility and composition skills of Shorter. The man could shine in all types of bands, writing modal jazz, funk, Latin, fusion, and avant-garde music. We are going to revisit his catalog, even giving Weather Report another chance.
