I have no idea how to interpret this painting by Edger Jean-Baptiste, entitled General Lugosongue Franchissant 10,000 Carreaux de Terre Par Permission Une Botte 200 Lieue. However, I recognize our church, St. Pierre, in the background. Who is this General Lugosongue Franchissant? Fortunately, the amazing Haitian Art Society is a great resource to see more example Haitian painting.
"General Lugosongue Franchissant 10,000 carreaux de Terre Par Permission Une Botte 200 Lieue
ReplyDelete(rough translation: General Lugosongue crosses 50 square miles with the aide of his 500 mile boots.)" If the translation is correct, "Franchissant" isn't a last name, it is the act of crossing (franchir) the area in question with the aide of General Lugosongue's 200 lieue boot
1 carreau to acre = 3.18766, 10,000 carreaux = 31,876.6 acres
Lieue = League
franchir une distance de 1000 kilomètres = to cover 1,000 kilometers
A less rough translation would read as: With his 200 leagues boot General Lugosongue covered 31,876.6 acres of land.
