We have forgotten the brilliance of Mingus. Revisiting his albums we have not listened to in several years increased our appreciation of "Bird Calls" from the 1959. A musical tribute to Charlie Parker, this exciting bop number is lively, inventive, Parkeresque and a whole lot fun. Mingus Ah Um is a masterpiece of jazz music, but somehow we did not appreciate "Bird Calls" until recently.
